When you arrive at the end of your run, don’t come to a complete standstill but gently keep moving as your heart begins to slow, your body begins to relax, and your breathing begins to ease. Give thanks again for God’s good air that has sustained you once again, and give thanks for your body that breathes it.

As you stretch and then relax each of your muscles, pay attention to each one. Notice the parts of your body which are tired and the parts which are pounding with energy and life. As you do so, ask for God’s light to see where God has been on your run.

Recall the twists and turns of your route, the landscape that flashed past, the figures you glimpsed on the road, the wind that brushed against your face.

What were the thoughts which passed through your mind?

Which of them gave you motivation and hope? Give thanks for the motivation which God has given you and for all the benefits that you have received.

Perhaps as you ran there was a moment when your energy flagged or you were distracted by worries. Perhaps there are things you need to change on the next run. Whatever it was, just acknowledge it and place it in God’s hands.

Before you return to your daily routine, consider what you need to strengthen you on the road ahead. Ask God for it now so that the rhythm of this run may continue in the rest of your life.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
