Those who climb know how to fear the mountains. Rocks may slip, weather may descend, darkness may fall. A climber needs great knowledge of the mountain in order to ascend safely. He or she must learn reverence and even awe for the mountains. Perhaps it is the same for those who wish to ascend towards God. Take a moment to ponder what it might mean to fear the Lord…
Look back on the journey that has led you here. What kind of knowledge have you learned about God? Are there stages through which you had to climb? How have you come to revere God? As you hear the words of the psalm, allow yourself to ascend this mountain with God…
The Lord’s is the earth and its fullness,
the world and all its peoples.
It is he who set it on the seas;
on the waters he made it firm.
Who shall climb the mountain of the Lord?
Who shall stand in his holy place?
The man with clean hands and pure heart,
who desires not worthless things,
who have not sworn so as to deceive their neighbour.
He shall receive blessings from the Lord
and reward from the God who saves him .
Such are the men who seek him,
seek the face of the God of Jacob.
O gates, lift high your heads;
grow higher, ancient doors.
Let him enter, the king of glory!
The one who created everything in the beginning is sovereign of the heights as well as sovereign of the depths. Make your ascent with God today, and from the summit look around at the whole of your life. See everything with God’s own eyes, and allow yourself to be filled to the brim with abundant gratitude towards your creator…
This gratitude sets you at the threshold of welcoming the presence of God into your life. Ask yourself whether it is you opening the door to God, or whether God is opening the door for you? Notice the ways in which God’s presence is becoming tangible in your life, and spend some time speaking to God and listening to God’s response…
