A Drop of Hope

Be Still the Earth

In this session, we will be praying with Psalm 41, which can be found as Psalm 42 in other versions of the Bible.

When emptiness grows within you, and a void imperceptibly opens up in your being, try to uncover your deepest longings. Are there places you long to be? People whom you long to be with? Or situations which you long to unfold in your life? Without any hint of disappointment or disillusion, let your longings loose for a little while in your prayer…

At the source of all your longing is a yearning for God. Once God’s presence filled you with delight. Now that delight has disappeared. Gaze towards God at the vanishing point of your thought. Allow the words of this psalm to awaken that yearning once again…

Like the deer that yearns

for running streams,

so my soul is yearning

for you, my God.

My soul is thirsting for God,

the God of my life;

when can I enter and see

the face of God?

My tears have become my bread,

by night, by day,

as I hear it said all the day long:

“Where is your God?”

These things will I remember

as I pour out my soul:

how I would lead the rejoicing crowd

into the house of God,

amid cries of gladness and thanksgiving,

the throng wild with joy.

Why are you cast down, my soul,

why groan within me?

Hope in God; I will praise him still,

my saviour and my God.

Remember a time when you felt God’s presence. Perhaps you recognised it because your tears tasted like bread, or because even your questions brought you closer to God. You delighted in God, just as a deer delights in running streams. Spend a few moments allowing your memory to rekindle your delight in God’s presence…

Notice how through all your longing for people, places, and situations, God is drawing me closer to Godself… even through disappointments and disillusions… Spend a while speaking to God about your longings, and ask God once again to fill the spacious core of your being with God’s presence…
