Today is Wednesday the 23 October, in the 29th week of Ordinary Time.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo sing: ‘We Nhliziyo yami’: ‘O my heart be wise when your enemies surround you.  Keep praying; ask the Lord for help.  For he is powerful.  That is your weapon; do not lose it.  Pray without ceasing, for the Lord is powerful.’

Today’s reading is from St Paul’s Letter to the Romans, using the Nick King translation.

In this passage, Paul is trying to give us reasons for choosing God rather than sin, as a part of his explanation of what God has done for us in Christ. Why do you think he talks of “weapons” of righteousness and unrighteousness?

What do you think it means to “give yourself over to God”?

Now listen again: what do you think Paul means by “Obedience that leads to Death”, and “Obedience that leads to Life”?

Lastly, how are you feeling now? Put into words a prayer to God that sums up what you want to say to him.
