Today is Thursday the 5 March, in the first week of Lent.

The monks of the Abbey of Keur Moussa sing Psalm 114, “I love the Lord, he hears my cry, he bends down to listen to me when I call” – words which paint a beautiful picture of God bending down to me like a mother or father bending down to their child, full of tenderness and love.   As I listen, I reflect for a moment on that ‘tender, loving care’ – that love that God has for me… and the love which I, in return, have for God.

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Matthew

In today’s reading Jesus encourages you to see and experience God as a loving parent – one who longs to give you good gifts and wants the very best for you.  Jesus had a rich and intimate relationship with his Father. He called God ‘Abba’, which can translate as, ‘Daddy’. What names do you use when you pray and talk to God? What might this say about your relationship?

Jesus encourages us to ask, search and knock. He says we can trust God to respond positively to our requests, in ways which will enable you to grow and flourish. How do you respond to this promise? Is there anything that makes you reluctant to ask God to lavish good gifts on you?

As you listen again ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the deep desires of your heart.

Take some time now to pray confidently to God, trusting him to respond lovingly to your deepest needs and longings. Ask, search and knock!
