Mysterium Amoris

Margaret Rizza

Today is Tuesday the 24th of February, in the first week of Lent.

The St Thomas Music Group sing Mysterium Amoris by Margaret Rizza, from a text by John Main: 'The meaning of life is the mystery of Love. Just as the roots of trees hold firm in the soil, so it is the roots of love that hold the ground of our being together.'

Today’s reading is from the Prophet Isaiah.

Isaiah 55:10-11

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,

and do not return there until they have watered the earth,

making it bring forth and sprout,

giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;

it shall not return to me empty,

but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,

and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

The basic image in this reading is that of the growth of plants, nourished by the weather. What brings that image alive for you where you are? Crops in fields, flowers in a garden, a potted plant in your room?

Isaiah understands the word of God to be every bit as productive as these fine-growing plants. Can you point to something in your own life that would support his belief?

What might God be hoping that his word is achieving in your own life at the moment?

Listen carefully again to this passage, which is itself the word of God addressed to you today.

Take a moment or two now to respond to God’s word with your own words to God in reply.

You have given all to me

To You, Lord, I return it.

Everything is Yours, do with it what you will.

Give me only Your love and Your grace,

That is enough for me.

Amen.
