Venite filii audite me

The Monks of Pluscarden Abbey

Today is Tuesday the 7th of April, in the first week of Easter.

The monks of Pluscarden Abbey sing 'Venite filii, audite me'. Come, my sons and daughters, listen to me…. Come to the Lord and be enlightened; and your faces will not be put to shame.’ As you enter into prayer now, can you sense that invitation from God? Can you hear those words spoken to you? And accept the welcome, and that reassurance that God wants to give you?

Today’s reading is from the Acts of the Apostles.

Acts 2:36-41

‘Therefore let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified.’

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what should we do?’ Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.’ And he testified with many other arguments and exhorted them, saying, ‘Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.’ So those who welcomed his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand persons were added.

Where It All Begins

In this reading Peter finishes his attempt to persuade those who called for the death of Jesus to recognise that God has raised him up. Is their reaction here what you would have expected?

Those who heard Peter were, St Luke tells us, “cut to the heart”. Why do you think this was so?

Peter’s call to repent, to turn back to God, echoes the call we heard at the start of Lent. What does repentance mean in the context of your own life?

Those who hear Peter respond with just five words: “Brothers, what should we do?” Can you make those words your own as you hear the passage read for a second time?

Take a few moments now to speak to God about whatever has struck you in this time of prayer, and of your own response to the good news of the resurrection.
