Today is Monday the 31st of August, in the 22nd week of Ordinary Time.

The Monks of Glenstal Abbey sing Nos autem gloriari:

‘We should glory in nothing other than the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom is our salvation, life and resurrection; through him we are saved and set free. May God have mercy upon us and bless us, may he make his face shine upon us and be merciful to us.’

As you listen, can you feel God’s face shining on you, and open yourself to that light, to that loving presence?

Today’s reading is from Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians.

1 Corinthians 2:1-5

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

Paul is here dealing with his rather difficult community of believers in Corinth. He says, “I decided to know nothing among you, except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” What does he mean by this? Perhaps this is something you could adopt in your life...to know nothing except Jesus Christ, and him crucified...

We hear that Paul arrived to them “in weakness and fear and in much trembling”. What might this tell us even about our great heroes in the faith?

Now listen once more as the passage is read a second time. Is there anything that really strikes you this time? What might God be saying to you here?
