In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The University of Johannesburg Choir sing the Creed:  “I believe in one God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.”

The Choir of Westminster Cathedral sing the Creed.

The First Luminous Mystery.  The Baptism of Jesus

In Baptism Jesus receives confirmation of his developing sense of self, then he hears the voice from heaven address him as Son and beloved. Do you know yourself to be a beloved child of God

As well as hearing the Father’s voice, Jesus sees the Spirit which confirms, this in a physical way. This is Jesus’ starting-point, what will his identity as Son Of God mean for him? Do you sense the Spirit opening you up to a new sense of God?

The Second Luminous Mystery.  The Wedding at Cana

The glory of God is woman and man fully alive. We would hope that a wedding would be precisely the place where that would be so. Where or when in your ordinariness do you feel fully alive?

In the miracles of the multiplication of the bread and here the wine, a statement is being made about abundance and fullness.  Later in the Gospel of John, Jesus says,  “I have come that they might have life and have it abundantly.” Do you have a sense that God’s gifts are enough and more than enough?

The Third Luminous Mystery.  The Proclamation of the Kingdom

We see in this scene Jesus’ familiarity with Scripture as he finds the place in the scroll.  We hear how reverently he unrolls and rolls up the scroll and makes sure it goes back to its proper place.  How familiar are you with the Scriptures and do you handle them with proper reverence?

As Jesus begins to build a picture of the proclamation of the Kingdom he can begin to identify  those for whom it will be good news.  He remembers this Scripture, that offers him a blueprint for his mission.  Are there any parts of Scripture that you see shaping your life?

The Fourth Luminous Mystery.  The Transfiguration

The events on the mountain of the Transfiguration reveal Jesus in conversation with two great figures from Israel’s history, Moses and Elijah. His own closeness to the God who will proclaim him his Son, is shown to us by the change in his appearance and the dazzling quality of his clothes. The disciples have a glimpse of Jesus’ true place in the great scheme of things. Do you see here how Jesus belongs in God?

The disciples are there watching. What do they see?  Maybe they see two things; The first is how the reality of God takes possession of Jesus.  But secondly, do they see something about the possibility that every human being can become more like God?  Do you see here how you can belong in God?

The Fifth Luminious Mystery. The Institution of the Eucharist

At the Last Supper, Jesus is with his disciples and his disciples are with him as he called them to be at the beginning of his ministry.  But this being with him is coming up against the horizon of being without him. The Eucharist is instituted in the interplay of presence and absence.  Do you know Christ filling you with his presence in the Eucharist?

He will be separated from them by death and the leaving which is the return to glory.  Do you anticipate the future sharing of communion promised by Jesus already in the here and now of our celebrations of the Eucharist, the pledge of future glory?

O God, your only Son, bought for us the rewards of eternal life.  Now, as we have meditated on these mysteries, may we imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
