Script

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The community of Taizé sing, “We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.”
The First Joyful Mystery. The Annunciation
Do not be afraid. These words in Scripture are nearly always meant to create a space in a person where God can work. How do you manage to bring together your sense of your own future; your hopes and dreams, and your sense of God’s desire for your life?
Mary finds the words to say Yes to God’s request. As I respond with thanksgiving for Mary’s generosity, is my own generosity creative?
The Second Joyful Mystery. The Visitation
Mary is on a journey to be with Elizabeth. On a journey to be with someone is phrase that can be used to translate the name Emmanuel (God with us).
Do you remember a time when you’ve been on a journey to meet someone? How did it feel?
Luke doesn’t tell us whether Mary had told Joseph about her pregnancy, and there is a sense that the very private Elizabeth has not let her pregnancy be known yet either, not even to Zachary. The two women then reveal their secret joy to one another for the first time. The joy they have been holding in bursts out. As a privileged observer of this intimate and exultant scene, do I recognise God at work here?
The Third Joyful Mystery. The Nativity
There is enough drama in this story to fill a soap opera. Yet the Gospel tells it so simply: she gave birth….she wrapped him in bands of cloth and laid him in a manger. Can you hear the wonder of the event in the simplicity of these words?
As the scripture ends, we await the arrival of visitors from near and far. You are also invited. What are you carrying that you need to let go of so you can simply offer you heart to God?
The Fourth Joyful Mystery. The Presentation
The whole world is touched by the appearing of this child, Israel and the world beyond Israel. Everyone will be touched by peace and freedom. Can I see in this scene anything that touches me in the same reassuring way?
But there is a negative side too. The turmoil created by the appearing of Jesus in Israel will come close to home. His own mother Mary will feel the pain of what is done to her son. Will she be able to bear it? Are you moved by the joy of this old man or by his hard word about Mary?
The Fifth Joyful Mystery. Jesus found in the Temple
The Jesus Mary and Joseph find is already different, on the brink of adulthood, more self-possessed, more God-directed. Do I have to re-define my relationships in order to be more focused on God?
The seeds of God’s future for Jesus are sown even while he is unaware of it. ‘What will this child be?’ Can you ask this question of yourself? ‘What will this child be?’ How will the Christ-child grow into your future? How will you grow into the future of this Christ-child?
O God whose only Son has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, Grant that having meditated on these mysteries, we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord Amen.
O God, your only Son, bought for us the rewards of eternal life. Now, as we have meditated on these mysteries, may we imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
