Today is Tuesday the 13th of December, the feast of Saint Lucy.

The Choir of Holy Sepulchre London sing, Es Ist Ein Ros' Entsprungen.

Es ist ein Ros entsprungen,

aus einer Wurzel zart,

wie uns die Alten sungen,

von Jesse kam die Art

Und hat ein Blümlein bracht

mitten im kalten Winter,

wohl zu der halben Nacht.

Das Röslein, das ich meine,

davon Isaias sagt,

ist Maria die reine

die uns das Blümlein bracht.

Aus Gottes ew'gem Rat

hat sie ein Kind geboren

und blieb ein reine Magd.

O Jesu, bis zum Scheiden

aus diesem Jamerthal

Laß dein Hilf uns geleiten

hin in der Engel Saal,

In deines Vaters Reich,

da wir dich ewig loben:

o Gott, uns das verleih!

Behold, a Branch is growing

Of loveliest form and grace,

as prophets sung, foreknowing;

It springs from Jesse's race

And bears one little Flow'r

In midst of coldest winter,

At deepest midnight hour.

Isaiah hath foretold it

In words of promise sure,

And Mary's arms enfold it,

A virgin meek and pure.

Thro' God's eternal will

This Child to her is given

At midnight calm and still.

O Saviour, Child of Mary,

Who felt our human woe;

O Saviour, King of Glory,

Who dost our weakness know,

Bring us at length we pray,

To the bright courts of Heaven

And to the endless day.

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Matthew.

Matt 21:28-32

‘What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, “Son, go and work in the vineyard today.” He answered, “I will not”; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, “I go, sir”; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?’ They said, ‘The first.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, the tax-collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax-collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.

Jesus is somewhat under fire here, as his opponents angrily surround him. How might the story of the two sons cast light on his situation?

Which of these two sons do you identify with? Spend some time reflecting on why this might be…

Reflect for a moment on “the will of [the] father”… how does the will of the Father play out in your life, do you think?

Now listen as the story is read to you once more; what strikes you most as you listen to it?

Finally, see if you can gather all the thoughts and feelings that have come to you during this time, and turn them into a prayer to God.
