Today is Friday 15 September, the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, in the 23rd week of Ordinary time.

Salt of the Sound sings, ‘It Is Well With My Soul’.

Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say

It is well, it is well with my soul

My sin - oh, the bliss of this glorious thought

My sin, not in part but the whole

Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well with my soul

It is well, it is well with my soul

It is well with my soul (with my soul)

It is well, it is well with my soul

Today’s reading is from the Letter to the Hebrews.

Hebrews 5:7-9

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

Today's reading invites us to watch Jesus at prayer, “with loud cries and tears”. Allow some of Jesus’ scenes of prayer to replay in your mind… What do you notice about his prayer?

“He learned obedience through what he suffered”. What do you think this might mean? Does it speak to you in your life today?

Now listen as the passage is read once more to you. How does it touch you today?

Finally, see if you can gather all your thoughts and reflections from this passage, and turn them into a prayer to God, or to Jesus.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
