Today is Sunday the 18th of September beginning the 25th Week of Ordinary time.
The Kyiv Chamber Choir sing the Kyrie.

Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy
The Reading is from the prophet Amos.
Amos 8:4-7
Hear this, you that trample on the needy,
and bring to ruin the poor of the land,
saying, ‘When will the new moon be over
so that we may sell grain;
and the sabbath,
so that we may offer wheat for sale?
We will make the ephah small and the shekel great,
and practise deceit with false balances,
buying the poor for silver
and the needy for a pair of sandals,
and selling the sweepings of the wheat.’
The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob:
Surely I will never forget any of their deeds.
Try to imagine whom the prophet is addressing: someone you know who is greedy? Someone who is ambitious and rejoices in being above others? Might he be talking about you?
Generosity to others, fair shares for all, care for the poor and the oppressed: these are all themes that we hear again and again in the voice of the prophets of God in the Old Testament; their message seems as relevant today as in ancient times. What relevance do these themes have for you?
God is angered when powerful people control the means of production and let the poor go hungry. As you hear today’s reading again, is there a word or phrase that seems particularly meaningful for you, for your attitudes or the way you lead your life?
Did you notice if there was something you wanted to express sorrow about? Perhaps about the way the poor are treated, or even something you may have done or said recently that you feel sorry about it. Speak openly now about it with Jesus, Lord of forgiveness and healing.
