Ubi caritas et amor Deus ibi est

Where charity and love are, God is there.
Love of Christ has gathered us into one.
Let us rejoice in Him and be glad.
Let us fear, and let us love the living God.
And from a sincere heart let us love one.
Where charity and love are, God is there.
At the same time, therefore, are gathered into one:
Lest we be divided in mind, let us beware.
Let evil impulses stop, let controversy cease.
And in the midst of us be Christ our God.
Where charity and love are, God is there.
At the same time we see that with the saints also,
Thy face in glory, O Christ our God:
The joy that is immense and good, Unto the
World without end. Amen.
Today’s reading is from St Paul’s letter to the Philippians.
Philippians 4:6-9
Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.
Whatever it is that has been worrying you recently, Paul reminds us to pour everything out to God in prayer, supplication and thanksgiving. As we begin our prayer, allow your heart to open up to God. Trust him with whatever it contains…
Paul promises us that the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guide our hearts and minds. As you pour out your heart to God, allow that peace to flood your heart…
As you listen again, notice the instructions that Paul gives. He invites us to keep doing what we have learned to do. What lessons have you learned recently that you would like to keep in your heart?
As we come to the end of this time of prayer, spend some time thanking God for the peace that he gives you. Whether you have experienced that peace in fragmentary moments or in abundant tranquility, recognise that the source is the same. It is God’s peace that passes all understanding…
