Today is Tuesday the 17 September, the feast of St Robert Bellarmine SJ, in the 24th Week of Ordinary Time.
The monks of the Abbey of Keur Moussa sing the Benedictus: ‘Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, He has visited his people and redeemed them’. As I enter into prayer today, I rest for a moment in the confidence that - whatever may seem wrong with the world, or with me or with my life - God’s love redeems it all: ‘The Lord has visited his people and redeemed them’.
Today's reading is from the Gospel of Luke.
Take a moment to imagine yourself as part of this scene. A young man is being carried out, dead. He’s the only son of his mother and she’s a widow, who now has nobody else to support her. Imagine her face. Imagine her grief.
If you can, picture Jesus entering the scene… touching the dead man, raising him to life… handing him back to his mother. Imagine her face. Imagine her joy.
Listen again to the passage. Is there some situation in your own life that seems hopeless? What would it be like for Jesus to touch that situation?
Is there anything you want to say to Jesus? Speak to him, as one friend to another.
