Today is Tuesday the 30 November, the feast of St Andrew, in the first week of Advent.

The choir of Portsmouth Cathedral Sing The Advent Prose. Pour down, O heavens, from above, and let the skies rain down righteousness

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Matthew.

Matthew 4:18-22

As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. And he said to them,

‘Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.

’ Immediately they left their nets and followed him.

As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.

The church today celebrates the fisherman Andrew, one of the first to be called by Christ. Imagine for a moment what it must have been like for him to hear and respond to that call.

What might it mean for a Christian disciple – perhaps Andrew, perhaps you yourself – to be invited by Christ to

“fish for people”?

Notice, as you hear the passage again, all that these four disciples have to leave behind to answer the call of Christ, and ty to hear why they might have thought this worthwhile.

Talk to the same Jesus who called Andrew. He also calls you in some way. How might you want to respond today?
