The Lord is my Light
Margaret Rizza
Today is Friday the 4th of September, in the 22nd week of Ordinary Time.
'The Lord is my light, my hope, my salvation. In him I trust.'
We rely on many things in our lives. On other people; on our wealth or our possessions; on our power, or reputation, or status; on our own ideas and talents. But as you enter into prayer now, can you put all those things aside for a moment, and place all your trust in God, your light, your hope, your salvation?
5:00
Today’s reading is from Saint Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians.
1 Corinthians 4:1-5
Think of us in this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they should be found trustworthy. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. I do not even judge myself. I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore do not pronounce judgement before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive commendation from God.

We return to Corinth today. Paul is still trying to stop those Corinthians from squabbling, and his answer to their tensions is that they should see things as God sees them. One of his techniques here is to get them to see himself and Apollos as nothing more than “servants” and “stewards”. Do you think that might stop their quarrels? Might it stop any in your life?
“For me, it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you”. How will the Corinthians feel about that? What effect might it have on them?
Now listen as the passage is read once more for you. This time, what is it that speaks most directly to you?

11:03
“The Lord will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness”. In these last moments of prayer, speak to the Lord about anything that needs to be brought into the light in your life.
12:56
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be
World without end
Amen
