Come, My Way

Today is Sunday the 20th of September, beginning the 25th week of Ordinary Time.

Come, my way, my truth, my life, As I enter this time of prayer today, I begin by inviting the Lord into my life. I acknowledge my need for God, to show me the way, to teach me the truth, to give me life.

Come, my way, my truth, my life;

Such a way as gives us breath.

Such a truth as ends all strife:

Such a life as killeth death.

Come, my light, my feast, my strength;

Such a light as shows a feast.

Such a feast as mends in length,

Such a strength as makes his guest.

Come, my joy, my love, my heart;

Such a joy as none can move.

Such a love as none can part,

Such a heart as joys in love.

Today’s reading is from the Prophet Isaiah.

Isaiah 55:6-9

Seek the Lord while he may be found,

call upon him while he is near;

let the wicked forsake their way,

and the unrighteous their thoughts;

let them return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on them,

and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways

and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah invites us to seek the Lord, to call upon God while he is near. God is not distant, but close – always longing to welcome us home.

When and where do you feel closest to God? Recall those moments. Speak to God about them now and give thanks.

When do you feel more distant from God? What draws you away, or makes you less aware of God’s presence? Tell God about those times, too.

Hear the promise of this passage again: God promises mercy and is ready to forgive. As you listen again, imagine yourself walking more firmly in God’s ways.

Isaiah reminds us that God’s ways are higher than our ways, and God’s thoughts are deeper than our own. When have you known this to be true in your life? Speak with God about anything that lingers around this idea...
