It is normal to worry about those who we love when we are apart from them. We may feel the pain of separation and simply want God to take care of them. If a loved one is unwell or going through difficulties, we may worry even more than usual. This prayer helps us to say thank you to God for all that you love about this person and to ask God to hold them in God’s loving care.

If you have a photograph of the person, you may want to place it before you as you settle to pray. If not, you may simply bring them to mind and use your imagination to picture them.

Put both feet on the floor and relax your shoulders. Let the earth below hold you now in prayer.

Still your body so that you might still your mind.

Become aware of your breathing. Notice the cold air on the end of your nose as you take a breath in. Take three long, deep breaths.

Become aware that God is very close to you right now. God looks at you with nothing but love.

Tell God about the person who is in your thoughts. Imagine showing God a photo of them and talk about what they are like as a person. Tell God what you love about them (and what frustrates you!). You love them all the same.

God asks you what you love or appreciate most about this person. Let God know and say thank you for the best qualities of the one you love. Savour the goodness of this for a moment.

As you think of your loved one, is there something you want to ask God? What do you want for them? Speak from your heart, as you might to a good friend. Tell God how it is.

Be still and quiet with God for a while.

As you close, know that God is as close to your loved one as God is to you right now. You might say these words from St Paul’s letter to the Ephesians ‘ I have never failed to thank God for you and to remember you in my prayers.; (Eph 1: 16). Amen.
