Ukuthula

University of Johannesburg

Today is Sunday the 11th of October, beginning the 28th week of Ordinary Time.

The University of Johannesburg Choir sing Ukuthula; Peace in this world of sin the blood of Jesus brings. Redemption in this world of sin the blood of Jesus brings. Notice the consoling peace and joy of Christ in the world around you today. If it is difficult to see, ask God for help.

Today’s reading is from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Philippians.

Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20

I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. In any case, it was kind of you to share my distress.

And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

This letter is full of gratitude, joy and peace. It is a thank you letter to the community of the Philippians for a gift wrapped in hope. Can you recall a time when someone reached out to you at just the right moment. just when you needed it most? Do you remember noticing God’s presence in the offering?

Knowing both hunger and plenty, hardship and generosity, Paul has learned the peace and confidence that comes from a deep trust in God. How does this speak to where your life is at this moment?

Where do you still struggle and strive for something more? What are the burdens that feel too heavy? Offer these honestly to the Lord. As you hear the passage again, notice which word or statement catches your attention.
