Today is Monday the 24 February, in the seventh week of ordinary time.

The Dunedin Consort sings Mache dich, mein Herze, rein from Bach’s St Matthew Passion:  Mache dich, mein Herze, rein.  ‘Make my heart pure.’ We tend not to think of ourselves, as pure, just because the bad feelings in our own hearts – anger, spite, impatience – are so plain to us. But what is a pure heart?  It is a heart that is open to God, that wants whatever God wants. I purify my heart whenever I ask God to show me the way, whenever I surrender my will to God’s will. And I can do that, now.

Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Mark.

Do you believe a person can change and become a new person?

What about yourself? Can you change and become a new person?

What about your country?  What about the world?  Do you believe they can change?

As you hear the conclusion of this story again, notice what it has to say about believing.

"All things can be done for the one who believes."  How do you react to these words? You might want to respond as the boy's father does: "I believe; help my unbelief" - or maybe it's something completely different that you want to say.  Whatever it is you want to say to the Lord, speak those words to him now.
