Today is Monday the 13 April in the season of Easter.
The Community of Taizé sing, ‘Bless the Lord, my soul, who leads me into life’. As you begin prayer today, there are many other people, around the world, also praying, also facing unusual situations – possibly housebound, disconnected, worried, bored. People may also be discovering unexpected gifts - more time and space, a sense of community, solidarity with neighbours they never knew… what is one unexpected gift that you’ve experienced in the midst of COVID-19 which lifted your spirits? … Savour that for a moment... Experience the feeling of gratitude and express that to the God who leads you into life...
Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Matthew.
When the friends of Jesus experience the empty tomb and meet the Risen Christ in sudden and unexpected ways, they react with both fear and joy. Amidst great challenges, unexpected surprises and amazing news can lead to a wide range of mixed emotions and responses. We’re not sure how to react.
Have you experienced some of this confusion during the current pandemic?
Jesus says: ‘Do not be afraid’.
What currently frightens you?
Is there anything giving you great joy?
Why do you think the disciples took hold of Jesus’ feet?
In what ways are you holding onto Jesus at this strange and difficult time?
Who do you know who might find it helpful to hold onto Jesus too at this time?
How can you encourage them to do that?
The religious authorities tried to hush up the news of the Resurrection – to change and circulate a different story.
As you listen to the passage again think about what the resurrection of Jesus means to you. As this time of prayer comes to a close gather together your thoughts and longings and lay them at the feet of the Risen Christ.
