God in all Things
St Ignatius believed that because God has made all things, God can be found in all things. All things teach us something about God’s nature.
There are so many things we take for granted in our lives, because of the busyness of our day.
This Examen gives us time to consider them.
Step 1: Invite God to be present with you.
In the first step of the Examen we invite God to be present with us, so that we can see what he is trying to tell us through all the things around us, that we experience without even noticing.
Step 2: Give thanks.
Think of one thing in the building you are in that you are grateful for. It could be a particular space, an object that is significant to you, or something that you own. All good things come to us through God. We thank him for the thing we have thought of.
Step 3: We review our day.
Look back over your morning. Can you think of anything you have seen, or that has happened to you, that brought you closer to God or a sense of goodness in this world?
What was that thing and why did it have that effect on you?
Look back over your morning. Can you think of anything you have seen, or that has happened to you, that separated you from God or a sense of goodness in this world?
What was that thing and why did it have that effect on you?
Step 4: Seek forgiveness.
Did something happen to cause that feeling of separation from God, or from goodness? Take a moment to reflect on this with God. You might like to say sorry to God for something. Speak with the God of love about it, then let that moment go.
Step 5: Look Forward.
Today, think about the words ‘curious’ and ‘active’...
These words encourage us to get out into God’s created world, to find God in all things and make this world the best that it can be.
Take a moment to resolve to be curious and active in the days ahead.
We end by giving glory to God, the creator of all things:
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
