Today is Friday the 30 August, in the Twenty First Week of Ordinary Time.

The monks of the Abbey of Keur Moussa sing: Le Seigneur est Roi: “The Lord is King, with majesty enrobed; the Lord has robed himself with might; he has girded himself with power.” As I listen, can I imagine God like this, as King of the world?  And the people around me, the whole world around me, as God’s kingdom?

Today’s reading is from Psalm 96 of the Grail version, and can be found as Psalm 97 in other versions of the Bible.

A psalm of praise to God, which offers us some powerful word pictures   - God surrounded by clouds and thick darkness, lighting up the world in a flash, accompanied by fire, mountains melting like wax…  What feelings do these evoke in you?  Wonder? Awe? Maybe a sense of distance?

How do you feel yourself responding to the more joyful images – of the earth rejoicing with God, of the heavens proclaiming God’s righteousness, of God guarding the lives of the faithful….?

Which of these brings you closer to God?  Which give you a sense of God coming closer to you?

As you listen again, look out for the word pictures or images which seem to bring God closer to you, and you closer to God.

In the final moments of your prayer, share with God what has touched your heart, and ask to be drawn deeper into God’s loving presence.
