TODAY IS FRIDAY THE 11 SEPTEMBER IN THE 23RD WEEK OF ORDINARY TIME.
Salt of the Sound sings ‘Unveil My Eyes’. How might your eyes need to be unveiled today so that you can recognise God’s grace?
Today’s reading is from the Gospel of Luke.
Luke 6:39-42
He also told them a parable: ‘Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully qualified will be like the teacher. Why do you see the speck in your neighbour’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbour, “Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye”, when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbour’s eye.
In Luke’s gospel Jesus offers an examination of how I live my life. His exaggeration of imagery may raise a smile, humour can catch us off guard but reassures us that we are being guided with kindness and compassion. How does this story speak to you?
Where am I critical or cynical towards others? Where do I point towards the faults of others to mask my own? Where do I disregard the teaching of my Lord, preferring my own justification?
Listening to the reading again, I respond to the questions Jesus asks with an open and honest heart. I am willing to be led with love towards a clarity of mission and purpose.
