Veni Creator Spiritus

Juliano Ravanello

Today is Sunday the 26th of July, beginning the 17th week of Ordinary Time.

Juliano Ravanello sings, Veni Creator Spiritus: ‘Come, Creator Spirit.’ How will you welcome this Creator Spirit within you today?

Veni Creator Spiritus,

Mentes tuorum visita,

Imple superna gratia,

Quæ tu creasti pectora.

Qui Paraclitus diceris,

Donum Dei altissimi

Fons vivus, ignis, caritas,

Et spiritalis unctio.

Tu septiformis munere,

Dexteræ Dei tu digitus,

Tu rite promissum Patris,

Sermone ditans guttura.

Accende lumen sensibus:

Infunde amorem cordibus:

Infirma nostri corporis

Virtute firmans perpeti.

Hostem repellas longius,

Pacemque dones protinus:

Ductore sic te prævio,

Vitemus omne noxium.

Per te sciamus da Patrem,

Noscamus atque Filium;

Te utriusque Spiritum

Credamus omni tempore.

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest,

Vouchsafe within our souls to rest;

Come with Thy grace and heav'nly aid

And fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

To Thee, the Comforter, we cry,

To Thee, the Gift of God Most High,

The Fount of life, the Fire of love,

The soul's Anointing from above.

The sev'n-fold gifts of grace are Thine,

O Finger of the Hand Divine;

True Promise of the Father Thou,

Who dost the tongue with speech endow.

Thy light to every thought impart

And shed Thy love in every heart;

The weakness of our mortal state

With deathless might invigorate.

Drive far away our wily Foe,

And Thine abiding peace bestow;

If Thou be our protecting Guide,

No evil can our steps betide.

Make Thou to us the Father known;

Teach us the eternal Son to own

And Thee, whose name we ever bless,

Of both the Spirit, to confess.

Today’s reading is from St Paul’s letter to the Romans.

Romans 8:28-30

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.

Be Still the Earth

St Paul reminds us in this passage that as members of the Body of Christ, we are known, called and held within God’s loving purpose. God desires that we grow into the likeness of Christ.

What family likeness do you share with Jesus? Where do you desire to become more like him?

We know that all things work together for good, writes St Paul. Bring to mind something in your life that seems unresolved, painful or uncertain. Speak to God about it honestly, from the heart. Imagine God gazing on you with love. Rest in the promise that God is at work within this situation, drawing good from it in ways you may not yet see.

As you listen again, notice the movement in the passage: called, justified, glorified. Where do you see that movement - however small - in your own life?

Finally, rest in God’s presence. Let the truth settle within you: you are held in God’s faithful love, and God is working all things for good.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be

World without end
