A deeper insight

Welcome to the Saturday Examen.

Take a moment to arrive at this prayer.

Whether through breath, or a gesture, or one or two words to God.

In the bible passage we prayed with yesterday, Ecclesiastes spoke of the different times that make up a human life, each appropriate to its season. Start this prayer by singling out one good time from the last few days and thanking God for it.

Now ask God for the gift of a deeper insight into what Isaiah called, earlier this week, God with us. Ask God to show you what he wants you to see here of everything that he has been doing with and in you.

Once you have asked God for that gift, let the last few days play out again before your mind’s eye. What do you especially notice? Where were you most aware of God? Where were you most fully the person God has created you to be?

Notice, too, your own responses to God during these days. Thank God for the times when you have put his gifts to good use. Express your sorrow for times when you have misused them.

Like an indulgent parent, God always loves to give us gifts. In the light of what you have noticed in this time of prayer, finish by asking God for the gifts that you need, for yourself and for those around you, in the coming days.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
